Lead guitar techniques III: anchor notes

This is a technique that is particularly suited to blues and jazz styles. It's simple yet effective in adding variety to your playing. Sometimes referred to as 'pivot notes', this simply involves returning to a particular note after each note you play.

If this is new to you then the easiest position is probably the minor pentatonic scale, root on 5th string. This is because of how the notes are spaced around the 2nd and third strings - you have three fingers that are pretty-much hovering over the notes.

Try this lick:

-----------------------------7-----------------------------
--------8--------10-----------------10--------8--------
---9--------9----------9-------9----------9--------9---
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
